Overview

Bone Health is extremely important for women of all ages. As we age, unlike other visible changes such as the receding hairline, and grey hair, bone density also decreases, but remains invisible. In specific, women experience bone density-related issues in various stages of their life. Osteoporosis in women post-menopause is a major factor causing hip and spine fractures and Disability in India.

Factors Affecting Women's Bone Health
1. Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the time when a woman faces major physiological and hormonal changes in her body. The demands of the baby growing in her womb take priority over the woman’s health, especially her bones. Calcium is highly important for fetal growth and if the mother’s diet lacks calcium then her fetus takes calcium from the mother’s bones, making her osteoporotic. Moreover, bone remodeling is under the influence of hormonal changes taking place in the mother’s body. Progesterone and estrogen affect bone density owing to the ongoing bone remodeling that reduces bone turnover thereby leading to bone loss in women. Therefore, factors such as adequate dietary intake of calcium and minerals, and weight-bearing exercises, during pregnancy are important aspects that must be taken care of while a woman is pregnant.

2. Menopause

Menopause is a phase in a woman’s life when her ovaries reduce producing estrogen and progesterone hormones. It is a crucial phase when the bone health is majorly affected. Normally, Estrogen is an important hormone for maintaining bone strength and a steady bone density. Due to reduced Estrogen formation, the bone density in women decreases thereby leading to Osteoporosis. Early menopause, family history, and low body weight are some of the risk factors associated with women acquiring Osteoporosis after menopause. Some of the common bone health problems during the menopause phase are back pain or bone pain, fracture from a minor injury or fall, or a change in posture.

3. After Menopause

Post-Menopausal phase is the most prevalent cause of osteoporosis in women. The significant decrease in Estrogen levels post-menopause hastens bone loss. Furthermore, the sedentary lifestyle and insufficient dietary intake of Calcium and Vitamin D further deteriorate bone density levels and all these lead to decreased bone density in women post-menopause. This is the reason why women are advised for a regular walk, exercise, weight-bearing activities and should undergo frequent medical check-ups.
